Food Oasis team member Raven Hardison spoke at LACMA with fellow artists, arts administrators, and arts advocates at an informal evening dicsussing experiences and ideas. Participants heard four different creative minds – artist, curator, educator, and social justice hacker – reflect on what’s been inspiring them, fueling them, and keeping them up at night.
Food Oasis Los Angeles (FOLA) participated in Feeding the 5000, a festival that celebrates the value of food, and calls on everyone to tackle food waste. Feeding the 5000 handed out over 5000 healthy meals from recovered food to people around downtown. Raven Hardison, a FOLA team member, also had the opportunity to speak about our work.
FOLA featured on CNN Tech as a tool to hack hunger
The CNN piece about hacking hunger is out! Back in December 2016,Food Oasis Los Angeles (FOLA) was interviewed by CNN Tech about their work as part of a growing movement where hackers get together to make a civic and social impact.
In the video and article, representative, and community advocate Andrew Douglas writes about the potential for the tech sector to confront persistent social deficits head-on. FOLA is highlighted as a shining example of such tech/civic collaboration addressing Food Deserts in Los Angeles.
FOLA is honored with Hack for LA/Code for America at City Council
In celebration of Open Data Day, Los Angeles City Controller Ron Galperin presented Hack for LA with an Award of Recognition for their efforts in developing civic technology. Food Oasis Los Angeles (FOLA) was honored as an exemplary non-profit, volunteer project with a focus on open data for research, human rights, and the environment.
FOLA presents to the Los Angeles Food Policy Council’s Farmer’s Market Working Group
Food Oasis Los Angeles (FOLA) presented foodoasis.la at the Los Angeles Food Policy Council’s Farmers Market Working Group to demonstrate the platform to a key constituent group: Farmers Markets.
This presentation reinforced the vision of the FOLA platform as an “income neutral” resource. We look forward to our continued work with the Food Policy Council and Farmer’s Markets!

FOLA at Food Day 2016
Today the FOLA team participated in the Food Day Los Angeles event. Our primary focus was to introduce the FOLA project to various advocacy groups involved with food policy issues in Los Angeles. We talked with numerous people about the mission of their organization and how technology might further advance their cause. The feedback was both enthusiastic and encouraging.
